Auctions vs Make an Offer — Which Fits Your Item

A fixed price isn't your only option. Resollo has two different ways to let buyers negotiate: timed auctions with competitive bidding, or Make an Offer on a fixed-price listing. They work differently and never overlap — here's exactly how each one runs.

Make an Offer — negotiate on a fixed price

Available on fixed-price listings only, and only when you allow it.

  1. 1

    Buyer proposes a price

The buyer sends an offer below your list price — the form starts at 90% of it, but they can enter any amount. You get notified straight away.

  2. 2

    You accept, reject, or counter

Accept it as-is, reject it outright, or send back a counter-price of your own. The buyer then accepts your counter, or the offer expires.

  3. 3

Needs an active Stripe Connect account

Offers work whenever you have an active Stripe Connect account and haven't turned them off for that listing. They're never available on auctions.

Auctions — timed competitive bidding

A different mechanism entirely: buyers bid against each other until a deadline, not against you.

  1. 1

Starting bid and a hidden reserve

You set a starting bid (the lowest amount accepted) and a minimum price that stays hidden from buyers — the item only sells if bidding reaches it.

  2. 2

Buyers bid, the page updates live

Each new bid has to beat the current highest. Outbid buyers get notified right away, so they can bid again before time runs out.

  3. 3

    Ends automatically at the deadline

When time runs out, the highest bidder wins — but only if their bid reached your hidden minimum price. If it didn't, the auction closes without a sale.

  4. 4

Requires a plan that includes auctions

Not every plan can list auctions — check the pricing page for which ones do.

Which one fits your item

A quick way to decide:

  • Choose Make an Offer when...

You know roughly what it's worth and want a straightforward, one-on-one negotiation with whoever's interested.

  • Choose an auction when...

You think competing interest could push the price up — collectibles, limited items, anything buyers might bid against each other for.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use both Make an Offer and auctions on the same item?
No — they're mutually exclusive. Auctions never show a Make an Offer button, and offers are disabled the moment a listing is set up as an auction.
Does every plan let me run auctions?
No — running auctions requires a plan that includes them. Check the pricing page for which ones qualify.
What happens if no bid reaches my reserve price?
The auction closes without a sale. Nobody is charged, and you're free to relist the item.
Do I need Stripe Connect to use Make an Offer?
Yes — offers are only available on listings from sellers with an active Stripe Connect account, and only if you haven't turned offers off for that listing.
Can I reject an offer without sending a counter?
Yes — accept, reject and counter are three separate options. Rejecting ends that offer; no counter is required.
Do buyers get notified if someone outbids them?
Yes — an outbid buyer is notified immediately, so they have a chance to bid again before the auction ends.
